Hanchette & Lawton Court Case Records, 1913-1914.

Case records, 1913-1914, of the law firm Hanchette & Lawton of Houghton County, Michigan regarding several incidents surrounding the Copper Miners' Strike of 1913-1914. In the case People vs. Cooper, et al, the verdict in the case was manslaughter by Copper Range Company deputies of two striking miners, sometimes referred to as the Seeberville murders. Hanchette & Lawton were contacted to investigate the appeal, eventually motioning for a Governor's pardon. Striking miners were also being evicted from company housing and Hanchette & Lawton represented the Quincy Mining Company during the proceedings and trials. Several public investigations examined the causes and events of the strike. The most important of these was an investigation taken up by the U.S. House of Representatives sparked largely by the Italian Hall disaster, which examined working conditions in Michigan Copper Mines. Hanchette & Lawton corresponded with Quincy Mining Company president, W.R. Todd on this matter, discussing events and tactics. Collection includes court records, inquest documents, private correspondence, photographs, and drawings.
